Introduction
This week’s Ofsted inspection outcomes again highlight the importance of governance and robust quality assurance, as well as starting points linked to curriculum, and the strengthening of pedagogical approaches.
There were two FE & Skills providers reviewed between 12th and 18th October. Below is a summary of findings and the key insights shaping quality performance in the sector.
Cross-Cutting Themes and Insights
1.Data Driven Improvement to Accelerate Impact
There is an expectation to use real-time metrics, for example, progress and attendance data, to trigger swift interventions, to evidence improvement, and to share with boards and senior leaders.
2. Starting Point Diagnostics and Curriculum Alignment
Standout providers utilise robust and systematic skills scans, initial assessments, and personal development plans to ensure alignment to job roles and progression routes. This ensures RPL is considered as well as immediate workplace relevance.
3. Governance Sharpened
Boards are requesting better, more accurate data that is in real time, to enable effective application of appropriate challenge to pace improvement.
4. Pedagogical Focus
There is a focus on targeted CPD and observation feedback as key measures to support improved questioning, sequencing and assessment.
5. Personal Development and CEIAG
Broader, better-sequenced wider development and careers guidance, especially for learners with high needs, are increasing relevance and participation.
Strategic Takeaways for Providers
- Real Time Metrics - ensure access to accurate and timely data dashboards with information about progress, off the job hours, attendance risk flags, qualification attainment etc. Provide exception reports for senior leaders and governance boards, adopt swift intervention measures.
- Onboarding and Curriculum Design - capture starting-point data (skills scans, RPL, role profile) to ensure curriculum, off-the-job and learning is mapped to workplace tasks and job roles. This avoids repetition in learning and may enable a reduced duration in some cases.
- Observation as a Tool for Improvement - ensure an observation-to-CPD loop; log observation findings, create meaningful action plans, ensure targeted CPD, and track completion and impact at trainer/coach level.
- Evidence Impact - provide governors and senior leaders with regular quality data to evidence pace and impact of continuous improvement.
- CEIAG - provide learners with appropriate and tailored careers education and guidance that reflects their interests, aspirations and helps to make them informed about potential next steps.
Final Thoughts
This week’s Ofsted round up highlights the importance of: accurate and real time data; governance scrutiny; aligning starting points and learning; strong pedagogical and quality processes; and tailored CEIAG, as some of the defining markers of high-performing providers. Those investing in real-time quality data, empowered governance, and responsive curricula will continue to lead the field in apprenticeship and adult learning outcomes.
